Creating exhibitions at the National Galleries of Scotland

The National Galleries of Scotland has a dynamic exhibitions programme. In addition to a major annual ‘blockbuster’ at the Scottish National Gallery [Royal Scottish Academy Building] during the Edinburgh International Festival, we also regularly mount Spring, Summer and Autumn exhibitions at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. We also organise an annual exhibition at our partner venue, Duff House, in Banff. Following on from a suggestion by Dr Felicity Grainger, this talk gives an idea of how such exhibitions are put together, from the initial germ of an idea, to the final installation and opening to the public.
Speaker Biography:
Dr Patricia Allerston is Deputy Director and Chief Curator of European and Scottish Art in the Collection and Research Department at the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS). From Autumn 2016 she has also been Co-Director of ‘Celebrating Scotland’s Art’: The Scottish National Gallery Project, responsible for conceptualizing and delivering a new suite of galleries for permanent displays of Scottish art. Before joining NGS, as Head of Education, in 2005, she was Lecturer in Early Modern European History in the Department of History at the University of Edinburgh (1997-2005), and the Department of Modern History at the University of Glasgow (1995-97). She has been a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society since 2002 and an Honorary Fellow in the School of History, Classics and Archeology at the University of Edinburgh since 2014.
