Wed 5 April to Wed 31 May 2023

11am – 6pm

First-floor

This exhibition of three women artists from the same family captures the essence of three different specialisms. Their work, at times, follows similar themes but, at others, contrasting viewpoints. It is the perfect opportunity to delve into each artist’s individual technique and discover their unique abilities in an immersive and fascinating way.
Janie Alston, Susan McFarlane and Flora McFarlane, will hold an exhibition beginning on Wednesday, April 5th and continuing until Monday, May 15th, 2023. The first-floor gallery space of the Club will be displayed with sculptures, fashion pieces and paintings. Each member of this creative family offers different experiences based on their medium of specialisation.

Janie Alston, a sculpture specialist, awarded the Carnegie Travelling Scholarship (1957) by the Royal Scottish Academy after completing her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at The Glasgow School of Art (1952-1957). She exhibited in Scotland and abroad, including The Royal Glasgow Institute (1966) and the Scottish Arts Council’s Madurodam Exhibition in the Netherlands, where she displayed ‘The Boy on the Donkey’ (1962).

Susan McFarlane, a passionate painter, studied Fine Art at Edinburgh College of Art and The University of Edinburgh (1989-1994) and at The Slade (1994-1996). Multi-award winner, Susan has been awarded The John Kinross Scholarship from the RSA; The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant twice (from Montreal, Canada); and The Slade’s Duveen Travel Scholarship (Barcelona). Her work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery; BP Portrait Award (2002), she has taken part in the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year (2013,2020) and Sky Landscape Artist of the Year (2015).

Flora McFarlane is about to embark on her adventures in the fashion industry, as she studies Fashion Design at The Glasgow School of Art and had the opportunity to spend a semester at The Paris College of Art (2022). Flora’s work expresses a nostalgic and evocative style from the past century, opposing modernisation and displaying confidence through bold design.

This is an exhibition you don’t want to miss! We look forward to seeing you there.
