A Scottish-born contemporary artist, Lewis Deeney grew up in Dumbarton before moving to Dundee to complete a contemporary art degree in 2020, graduating with first-class honours. Lewis continued his studies at DJACD after receiving a William S Philips Award scholarship, earning a MFA in Art & Humanities in 2021.

During the degree shows, Lewis won the James Guthrie Orchar Memorial Prize and the Farquar Reid Trust Prize, and was selected for the Freelands Painting Prize. As a result of two successful solo exhibitions in Scotland, Lewis’s artworks have been acquired by a number of institutions and private collectors in the UK and Europe. Among the awards this year, Lewis has been shortlisted for the Chaiya Art & Spirituality Award.

The geometric shapes of his abstract pieces are cut and rearranged with laser techniques, transforming them into interlocking geometric patterns. As a result, not only do his pieces convey a sense of dehumanisation, but they also reflect on what it means to be human and how we define ourselves. Deeney’s artworks are capable of being interpreted in many ways and that is his main intention, making the viewer wonder about what they see within the piece.
