About

Nigel Johnson also known as Nij (rhymes with bridge) is an artist and painter living and working in Glasgow UK. He was born near Blackburn Lancashire and lived there until aged 18. After five years in Manchester he moved to Glasgow and has been here ever since.

His interest was stimulated by weekly visits to the local municipal art gallery and museum as a child with his mum. Figurative painting was also encouraged by his Great Aunt Edna an accomplished, exhibiting, amateur artist and business woman.
There then followed a long hiatus while he pursued a successful academic career in science and engineering.

He received tuition in drawing, life drawing and figurative sculpture around 25 years ago via evening classes at Glasgow School of Art. He received tuition in oil painting under Dennis Bannister https://www.facebook.com/DensArtClass
and has received tuition in oil panting from Sandy Guy and Caroline Gormley at https://www.facebook.com/pg/MadeInPaisley.
In 2019 he won the Paisley Art Institute William and Mary Armour Award for the painting Saltie: Apex Predator.
His influences and inspiration are portraiture including birds and animals where he strives for the personality of the ‘sitter’, and notable buildings within the urban environment, where mood of the place is reflected. In essence his artwork reflects and gives selective prominence to the people and places that surround him.
