Description

The painting is obviously a homage to Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’ which is one of the most familiar images of Modern Art. Munch wrote about suffering from a terrifying panic attack whilst walking along a path next to a fjord. “As I walked the clouds turned as red as blood I sensed a scream passing through nature.” That provided the inspiration for Munch’s painting as the primal figure in the foreground is responding to that scream. I used Munch’s phrase “A scream passing through nature” as inspiration for my painting. Our planet is screaming and has been for many years, the people with power have chosen to close their ears.

My painting started as a complete figure against a red background but slowly a inky dark took over becoming more and more pessimistic. So I introduced some light at the edge of the painting as maybe just a wee bit of hope.
