On a recent visit to Rome I sought in vain to establish JM Turner’s vantage point for his rendition of ‘Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino’ only to realise that he had used considerable artist’s licence to create his composition. This is my version.
One of a series, informed by vibrating colour relationships formal balancing. The tension between colours and shapes offers to the viewer both an immediate spontaneous response and considered intellectual reflection.
In this painting, I was exploring the idea of finding the revelation of someone’s character through their clothing. Therefore I see this painting as a sort of portrait, encouraging the viewer to imagine and create a story of the wearer of the shoes.
