I am an architect with a lifelong commitment to Art and artistic endeavour. Born in Glasgow, I declined the offer of a place at Art School to train as an architect, never once losing my passion for hand drawing, painting, and craft. As design partner, I shaped a practice that delivered many innovative and iconic buildings in Glasgow, whilst establishing a reputation for quality and innovation. My approach to architecture relies on the communication of ideas and the development of concepts through the medium of hand drawing and painting. My drawings have won several awards, including the gold medal for architecture from the Royal Scottish Academy and have been exhibited at exhibitions in the House for An Art Lover; The Royal Scottish Academy; The Royal Academy and the Sir John Soane Museum.
I continue to teach and mentor generations of young architects as a visiting professor of architecture at schools in the UK, United States, and China, stressing the critical need that students develop and maintain their artistic skills for their own satisfaction and to better their means of communication with potential clients.
I have always drawn and painted for pleasure and maintain sketchbooks that record my travels. My visual diaries of my family during Covid lockdown won the Royal Institute of British Architects Journal drawing prize and are now held by the Mitchell Library as part of Glasgow’s “story”. My triptych of the fire that destroyed Mackintosh’s Glasgow School of Art in 2018 was shortlisted for the best architectural drawing at the World Architecture Festival.
