The Timeless Myth-scape

The ‘archetypal image’ of the ‘Monarch of the Glen’ (Landseer) or ‘My Heart is in the Highlands’ (McCulloch) in reference to Scottish landscape painting is well known. In the days before the wide spread use of photography the painter would wander through the hills up winding rivers and lonely crags in search of ‘that place’ where time stands still. That place where all the elements come to gather and mingle in the ever-changing light. This experience of place brings to mind, a touch stone of the sublime. It is this experience I wish to emulate in my pictures.

When I go out on the hunt for a composition I gather fragmentary sketches over many excursions, which I combine in the studio on an enlarged canvas, built from scratch in the time tested ways of the Old Masters. Integrating the natural world through deep presence and study together with intuition and imagination, I work towards an amalgamated Myth-scape. I strive to bring an essence of that landscape to the viewer where they are elevated into a timeless world.
