About

I am a graduate of the Design School of Glasgow School of Art: BA (Hons).

I also have an MSc and a PhD from Strathclyde University Business School.

While I was in Egypt working on my PhD thesis I developed an interest in the beautiful, meticulous Islamic calligraphy and metalwork of the region.  This has influenced my love of detail which I try to carry through to my works.

It was, however, only after years on Arts committees, along with guiding at the Burrell Gallery that I began creating my own art: initially botanical subjects in graphite and watercolour, but later, illustrations and the addition of pastels which help to reinforce my preference for drawing.

My aspiration as an artist is to bring ‘otherworldly’ joy to the somewhat mundane side of life through my choice of whimsical subjects…especially if they include animals.  These are largely illustrations which might be based on fairytales or children’s stories such as Alice-in-Wonderland, or Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

I also enjoy depicting exotic characters from history or historic tales, for example, Cleopatra, or Scheherazade from the 1001 Nights

I have exhibited botanical works at the Pittenweem Arts Festival and at Aiket Castle and I have works in private collections in the UK, Croatia and New Zealand.
