Description
A small study for a painting.
During all his recent media coverage, saw an image of Lord M turned slightly to his left but looking to his right which recalled the pose of Innocent X in his portrait by Diego V; that in turn made me think of seeing Lord M at his Introduction to The House of Lords in a red woollen robe with a white collar. Decided to paint him wearing a hybrid of the Papal satin and Lords’ woollen robes; decided further to deploy a white towelling bathrobe (from a widely utilised news image of the disgraced peer holidaying on Epstein’s island) instead of white linen vestments and, in place of Velazquez’s letter of introduction and recommendation, stuck a mashup of Mandy’s messages to Epstein in his L hand. If parodying this was good enough for Dali, Bacon and others, I’m happy to follow on and, since I was plagiarising anyway, took a Britney Spears song line for a title.
