The beginnings of the film archive in Scotland from its inception as a Job Creation Scheme in 1976. A personal memoire by the archive’s first curator illustrated by examples of films rescued in those early years and that led to the uncovering   of a hitherto hidden Scottish film history.

 

Speaker Biography:

Janet McBain is the founder curator of the Scottish Screen Archive since 1976. Retired 2011.

Author of articles and essays on Scottish film history.

Received BAFTA Scotland award for Outstanding Achievement in Film 2006.

She is known as an expert on Scottish film and as well as her work with the Scottish Screen Archive she was also on the Film Archive Forum UK and the Scottish Council on Archives.

Janet McBain was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt) from the University of Glasgow during the Commemoration Day ceremony on 15th June 2016.
