Sat Mar 19th & 26th – Copying the Classical Portrait Workshop

Two Saturday workshops conducted by the Scottish School of Classical Art – 11am to 4pm with a one hour break for lunch.

Replicating an old masters painting reveals the techniques and secrets of their methods. During our intensive workshops, the students will work for four hours per day. They will study from a high quality digital reproduction and produce a classical portrait or figure. The course starts with a technical demo of colour mixing, imprimatura preparation, palette organisation and how to prepare mediums. During the class, discussions will include master drawing techniques, tracing and copying. Students will study a variety of lighting situations, and how they reveal the form. Brush strokes, blending, use of media, palette preparation and painting posture are all conveyed, students also learn value scales. Students learn a huge variety of techniques and make their studies utilising all of the principles described above.
