30th Nov to 1st February: Brumalia – Members Winter Exhibition

An exciting and diverse exhibition of works by members and invited artists.

Brumalia is an ancient Roman festival celebrated at the time of the Winter solstice to honour the gods Bacchus, acknowledged as the god of wine, and Saturn, the god of agricultural abundance as a time of rejoicing and merriment.  The festival’s name deriving from the Latin root ‘bruma’ implying the shortest day in noun form.

The exhibition brings together a diverse array of works produced by the Club’s elected artist members and invited guest artists Le Liu and Sharon Thomas.   A number of works will also feature in a display of affordable small works.

Members showing work include Alastair Blain, Christopher Allan, Denise Fraser, Donna Fleureau, Delyth Reid, Doreen Davis (Frew), Dugald Cameron, Florence Sinclair M, Frank Gallacher, Frank McNab, Gary Craig, Gregory Rankine, Helen Pentland Ross, Ian Campbell, Irene McCann, Jim Davis, Jim Wylie, Lesley Banks, Liz Dulley, Margaret Johnston, Michael Doherty, Miroslav Masek, Patrick Dorrian, Pawel Kosior, Robert Kelsey, Ron Kenyon, Stewart Gardiner, Suzzie Swan and Thomas Jacobi plus Senja Brendon as the exhibition’s featured artist member.

Invited artists Le Liu and Sharon Thomas will be exhibiting a selection of works from their new body of collaborative paintings ‘Garden of Eden’ showcased during the 2024 biennale Glasgow International Festival of Contemporary Art, to quote freelance arts writer Giovanni Giacoia:

The work comprising the show, the first collaboration for both artists …ask important questions about authorship, signature, and originality; they move painting to a position of vulnerability where the image and the handling of materials by one painter is questioned or assessed by the other. The Garden of Eden becomes an opportunity to reflect on the origin of a work of art: is the origin in the source materials or is the origin in the subject-matter; is the origin in the trace left by either Liu or Thomas? … Painting is bound to be an historical confrontation and the questions Liu and Thomas ask feel like a record of that process.
