About Robert Mulhern

Robert Mulhern studied drawing and painting at Glasgow School of Art under William and Mary Armour, Geoffrey Squire, and David Donaldson, and also lithography with Henry Hellier. After teacher training at St Andrew's College he spent two years of National Service in Aden, which he has described as being like a mixture of Evelyn Waugh and the Arabian Nights.

The National Service threw all the artists and poets and writers together, in volcanic Aden, and a meeting there with Barry Adalian led to a major exhibition of Scottish Painting later in London, in Adalian's "Upper Street" Gallery in Islington, in 1970. Mulhern organised the exhibition including Donaldson Squire Goudie Robertson Ferguson and others. The show was sent on to Hamburg, one of the first to cross the chanel.

Robert Mulhern exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Glasgow Institute, the Royal Scottish Society for Painters in Watercolour, the Paisley Institute of the Fine Arts, and in many solo and group exhibitions in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. His works are in collections from Australia to Hollywood, from Trinidad to Dublin.

In 1993 he and his wife Rosaleen Orr opened Studio Arts Gallery in Kilbarchan, and mounted over 30 exhibitions, retiring in 1999. They showed new graduates and senior members of the Scottish Arts establishment, as well as works loaned from London and New York. Studio Arts was highly praised by art critic Clare Henry.

Robert Mulhern's interest in music and the theatre is often reflected in his art. His sitters have included the ballerina Lucette Aldous, the prima donna Claire Rutter, the poet and journalist Lesley Duncan, and the crime writer Alex Gray.
